    Hello Doug I'm new to hoya world. I have ordered a few starter for beginners. I just ordered the finlaysonii. I wanted it for the veined leaves and I can't afford the callistophylla. And to be honest I can't tell the differents other then the price. But anyway I was doing my research on this hoya and came across ur UA-cam video. That really made up my mind abt the finlaysonii tha😊nk you for the video and I will continue my research on all my new hoyas. And for me it's not the flowers it's the Foliage even though the blooms is a plus. Karen

      Лучше всего эта хойя будет храниться в чипсах из кокосовой шелухи и в теплой и влажной среде. Поливайте непосредственно перед тем, как субстрат высохнет. Ему нужно лишь умеренное количество света. Надеюсь это поможет!

    Hi Dave, I’m a newbie hoya collector coming at you from Nebraska! I am reaching out to ask if you would help me get a grow tent set up for incoming new plants. Quarantining them is my goal with the tent. I have no idea what I would need beside the tent itself. Any suggestions for getting the equipment is greatly appreciated. :-) Cheers!

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas Місяць тому

      Hi Ellen, Other than getting yourself an LED grow light, and fan, you might need some kind of plastic benches to set plants on if your tent is large enough. If it is a small tent, then don't worry about the benches. Grow lights have come way down in price so it should not be too expensive. Look to the reviews on Amazon, and you should not go too far wrong.

    • @ellennovak5214
      @ellennovak5214 Місяць тому

      I'm looking at the 4'x4x'x80". The tent alone on amazon is $180.00 there is a tent w kit for $600.00. The kit has a ventilation kit and other things. Do I need a ventilation kit for that size you think

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas Місяць тому

      There is a Vivosun 4x4 grow tent for $129 that is plenty good enough; I have one. You don’t need a ventilation kit as all that would do is to exhaust the humidity out of the tent and that is the opposite of what you want to do.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

      I believe that Hoya calycina probably does like slightly cooler temperatures. My plants have generally flowered in the slightly cooler days of autumn. I don't know if you live where it is really hot or not. It might be best to check with a grower in Florida to see if they easily bloom this plant.

    Afternoon Doug, it's been a while! These are so gorgeous and lush looking the blooms are so cool with their subtle beautiful colours! Hoyas never cease to amaze me with their variety of leaves and blooms. I am again out of room and I seriously need to rehome (a nice way to say sell) some to be able to add new Hoyas I can't live without... like IM-08 with the beautiful fuzzy blooms you made a video of a year or so ago.. she was an instant must have. It's almost impossible though... with all the new Hoyas coming on the market and prices so reasonable I need to be very careful, lol. I started using just the coco husks a year or so ago but found on the thinner leaved Hoyas I needed to add something to help retain water.... but also ended up watering everyone much more often.. so now my mix is the the coco husks, vermiculite and a bit of cactus soil. I'm still working part time so my time is important to be able to properly take care of all my Hoyas and enjoy them without burnout. Hope the weather has been kind to you... it's sure been terrible this spring for so many people. Take care and happy growing! 💚

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas Місяць тому

      Good morning Carol! There does seem to be more and more amazing Hoyas making into the trade. You are also correct that they are coming much faster than in the old days. I have the same problem with trying to figure out how to find space to bring some of them in, while still keeping some of my favorites around. Thank you for the advice on additives to add to the coco chunks to help retain some water for longer periods. I am beginning to find that it is not sustainable trying to keep some of these plants watered. Yes, burn out is a problem! I have almost eliminated root rot, but if I can't keep them watered enough, that causes its own issues. I am going to try gradually adding some more moisture retentive things like vermiculite each time I do an up-potting to see if it helps. Nice to here from you, and happy Memorial Day Weekend!

    I don’t know how you have the patience to water a plant 3-5x’s a week along with the rest of your collection! When you restart it, hopefully one of the cuttings will take to a less fast draining substrate?😅 or a mix! Like coco husks + moss? I’m often drawn to hoyas from the Philippines or Borneo, but I’ll keep an eye out for PNG now 😉 Anyways, beautiful hoyas! Thank you for sharing 😊

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas Місяць тому

      Hi Ria! Funny you should mention the watering as it is becoming a problem for me. I simply can't keep many of these plants growing only in coconut husk chips wet enough, and I don't have the time for these long soaks to rehydrate them. Yesterday I up-potted one of them and used a 50% peat-based chunky mix like I used to use, to surround the root ball. I can't keep up with all of this very time consuming watering any longer. Watering a plant once a week is really all I've got in me. Thanks again for watching and I hope that you have a very enjoyable summer!

    2:31 Those are wonderful flowers, didn't see the fringing in the 1st shots. I see Hoya yvesrocheri has stapelia like flowers, several species of Hoya do, which is unsurprising as they're from the same family of plants. I got a Hoya coronaria Narathiwat cutting (or several cuttings) from AH Hoya because of their resemblance to Stapelia flowers. Searching for the name, seems this was just an AH Hoya thing, wondered if they'd named it themselves - now I'm seeing another offering from TropicsAtHome, dunno if they got theirs from AH Hoya or if this is a now recognized subspecies. Anywho, the plant's been growing quite well but NO flowers so I've started a couple of cuttings in other locations, one with considerably more light. I do think Hoya are generally high light plants - but available space in a grow room...

    Doug, I cannot thank you enough for sharing this product with us. You are a lifesaver! I have been battling root mealies in my collection for years now, and nothing has truly worked. It's nearly driven me to the point of madness. I've tried everything from chop and propping my entire collection three times, systemic granules, soap and neem soaks, and the hot water treatment that was all the rage recently. I've lost so many plants along the way. I was almost to the point where I was either going to quit hoyas entirely or put my remaining hoyas in a closed tent or cabinet and nuke them with Bonide or Bayer Tree & Shrub, as I'd never use those products around my kids and cats. This product truly sounds like a miracle! I'm ordering right away. Wishing you all the best! PS: Your plants have never looked better! 😍

      V., you will love this product, and if you stick with it, you won't be able to find a root mealie in a couple of months. It works where nothing else did for me. Your experience with root mealies mirrors a friend of mine in VT, who finally gave up and left the hobby. Systemics like Bayer Tree & Shrub knock the pest back, but does not seem to eliminate them. Believe me that I tried them all, and PureCrop 1 is the only thing that really worked. It worked so well that I'm no longer afraid of root mealies as I know that I can eliminate them in a short while with this product. Good luck, you will notice after using it for a while that your plants will have a new vigor! All the best, Doug

      Hi Nina, I don't use anything special. For almost everything I use Jacks 20-20-20 at 1/2 teaspoon/gallon of water. Good luck with your new channel!!

    Hi Doug, you are my go to before I purchase a Hoya. If you endorse a Hoya, it’s good to have in my collection without a debate. I really hope you are not cutting off those beautiful flowers, as I believe flowers are the crown & glory of a plant’s life. It lives and grows to culminate in blossoms. It’s sad if we cut them off and toss them. Maybe you can put it in the shower once a day and rinse it down. Kindly! Best Regards.💚💚

      Hi Asha, Thank you for leaving the nice comment! I will try a little harder not to cut off the flowers in the future, but it is really difficult trying to keep a tidy house, when there are so many Hoya flowers. I don't mind sweeping the spent ones away, but the nectar dripping is really difficult to deal with, but I shall try harder!

    Beautiful plant. Do you have a video that discusses the care and substrate used with this particular type of hoya?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas Місяць тому

      I have a lot of videos of this plant, but nothing detailing its care. It is likely because my particular clone is extremely hardy, growing well in just potting soil with a little extra perlite thrown in. Like most Hoyas it grows much faster with adequate humidity and good light, but this one is really straight forward.

      Hi Phillip, It won't take you that long to update. Hoya obovata is a pretty quick, easy grower. It is also one of the best Hoyas for people new to the hobby to start with - Great choice!

    Good Morning Doug, This video is AMAZING!!! I will have to try light manipulation. Can you tell me what you use for Fertilizer? Just stunning plants as always!

      Good morning Terri, if you are the Terri from VT and want to contact me directly my email is dougchamberlain61@gmail.com I don't use anything to special for fertilizer; mostly use Jacks 20-20-20 at a 1/2 teaspoon/gal every time I water.

    Did you mix it with water and spray it on?

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas

      Yes, I put 2 heaping tablespoons in a 2 liter sprayer filled with water, kept shaking it and spray all surfaces of the plant.

      It has worked for everyone that I know who has done it. You should notice a big difference in growth in a few weeks!

    I'm definitely going to get some of that. My hoyas have been failing for about 3 years now. Roots look terrible. Although I haven't seen root mealies, I suspect they are there. Just lost a really nice Flagellata that used to flower all the time. I took cuttings, they would root, I'd pot it up, and fail again. Plan to repot everything in the next few weeks and see what's going on.

      PureCrop 1 has literally done wonders for my roots. I was just marveling this morning one how good they look now; it is like a miracle actually. I suffered with root issues just like you are for a very long time as well. PureCrop took care of the problem, and I really am not trying to sell it, and make nothing off from it, but it really works.

    I have struggled with this plant. My first cutting didn't root. My second one did root and did well for a long time, flowering often, but eventually started dying. I think this was after I left it outside too late into the fall and it got too cold. I saved a cutting which did really well, but it got cold during a power outage and died very quickly. I'm guessing this plant does not like to get cold, so I'm going to consider this one a warm grower. I'm going to put my new cutting into a warm, humid grow tent I set up for hoya endauensis and see how that goes.

      Hoya Rebecca, grows much the same as Hoya lacunosa, and can be a little slow to get going. I have a huge specimen in a bathroom window where it did well all winter long. I found that this one like most of my Hoyas does very well in a mostly coconut husk chip substrate. I dunk the entire pot in water every 10 days or so, drain and hang it back up. I think the coco chips give the roots plenty of air while also keeping it moist enough. Good luck re-establishing your plant!

    This was an informative video! I have a large tent with Hoya and will order a microscope and sulfur. There are several of the same issues with my plants that you described.

    • @DougChamberlainVTHoyas
      @DougChamberlainVTHoyas 2 місяці тому

      I never had the patience to actually see one of these pests with the microscope, but the sulfur really worked beyond my expectations in making all of the Hoyas burst into growth again. Good luck with your spraying!
